The Pageant: A Tradition from the Town School

The moving Nativity pageant, in which the entire school participates, was begun in 1940 and has been held annually ever since. Changes and variations have been minor, though the presentation has been held in various churches of the city–Grace Covenant, the sanctuary of the First Evangelical Lutheran, St. James’s and All Saints.

The angels high in the background, the cherubs climbing into windows or walking in the aisles with tiny candles, the shadows of shepherds and the Holy Family and the kings and pages moving in majesty down the aisles are never to be forgotten.

The same ragged shepherds hold their once white lambs; the same silver angels appear from the shadows. There are few changes in the villagers who come to pay their taxes; even the striped shawls and blue robes have been worn by older sisters in other years.

The pageant is always the same, for the story is never changing—a child, a mother and “angels bending near the earth.” The overtones of “Joy to the World” drift off into echoes; for a moment the thought of Peace on Earth seems not an impossible dream of the heart.
